THE MEASURE OF A HEART
By Sam Tumblin
It is amazing how we guard the ones we love,
Like a sparrow sheltering its young above.
Feeding, clothing, giving what we can,
Even surrendering pieces of ourselves by hand.
For those who have known such love,
There is a comfort that rises from above.
A quiet peace that cannot be bought,
Found in every selfless deed we’ve wrought.
To know you eased another’s pain,
Or helped them stand through wind and rain,
Is a reward beyond wealth’s art—
The true measure of a caring heart.
If you’ve abandoned love as a hopeless try,
Believing every effort passed you by,
Take a moment and let your spirit start,
Open the door that’s locked your heart.
For love has a way of finding room,
Even in seasons shadowed by gloom.
And when it arrives, you’ll understand the part
That makes compassion the measure of a heart.
It is amazing how we guard the ones we love,
Like a sparrow sheltering its young above.
For in giving more than we can afford,
We discover the heart’s greatest reward.
